Second, expanded & updated edition. ... This book is for everyone with an interest in Jewish history in Bulgaria and the Balkans, and in the general history of southeastern Europe. It is designed to be a journey through both territory and time, illuminating the sometimes very complex backgrounds while guiding through the topography. Many of the monuments described in it are hard to find and in various stages of disrepair: poignant reminders of a long-disappeared culture, but also pointers to the present and the future. A collection of classic Bulgarian poems, selected and translated by Christopher Buxton. ... Bulgaria lies at the south east tip of Europe and Bulgarians are painfully conscious of this, particularly in the context of their 500 year subjugation by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Their history before and after this subjugation has its glorious and inglorious aspects, typical of every country's history. It is a story of resilience, bravery and faith alongside darker themes of betrayal and massacre. Включва поезия на поетите преди Втората Световна Война: народни песни, събрани от Братя Миладинови Петко Славейков ... |

This book surveys the major linguistic and social changes which shaped the English language. It begins with the Proto-Indo-European common ancestor, goes through Old English and Middle English providing illustrations of the changes with authentic texts, and finishes with Early Modern English. The text is written for advanced non-native students of English who are curious to find out how from some obscure Germanic dialects spoken in an abandoned Roman colony on the edge of Europe a new global language evolved. ... |

"The history of the Jewish ethnicity and its material culture are inseparable from Bulgarian history and culture. Regardless of the preceding series of conscientiously carried separate studies on the topic of the fate of local Jewish communities and especially on the issue of synagogues as their most prominent artistic creations during the long centuries of exile, the "last word" in that respect was not either said or written until now. Professor Jan Assmann of Heidelberg University says: "The cultural memory procures "breathing air" to the world that is too narrow for the everyday realities ... |

Meta-anthropology of the history of the 21st century. The author sets out his philosophical perspective on the causes and aftermath of the war in Ukraine through the prism of the meta-anthropology of history, drawing on the biblical parable of David and Goliath to clarify the dichotomy between the new humanism and neo-totalitarianism. The new humanism is not just an ideology or a practice of sympathy for the afflicted, especially in war, but is expressed in an effective and wise understanding of the Other that prevents death and destruction. Most importantly, the new humanism must actually prevent and stop crimes against ... |

The beginnings of Sofia University may be traced back to the year 1888, ten years after the end of the Russian-Turkish War, which had begun in 1877, and which resulted in a recreated Bulgarian state re-emerging on the map of Europe. The state was small in territory, as well as in population. The capital, Sofia, numbered not more than 20,000 inhabitants. However, in this semi-oriental city, a Higher Pedagogical Course was started in 1888, and it was this that later grew into a modern higher education institution. The subsequent founding of the University was a single act, but behind it stood ages of history. ... |

"It is well know to all how much daily problems the Bulgarian people has in these days. However, more dangerous than anything is the tendency to loose identity and national selfconfidence. This is a clearly visible tendency in the inscriptions of foreign languages, mass emigration and the wish for imitation of foreign culture. At other side, the answer to the question, "Why are you ashamed to call youself Bulgarian?" is more than obvious: there is in the present time to be proud of. The above-described situation makes preservation and popularization of Bulgarian History extraordinarily important. If it ... |
